HIKING THE MOUNTAIN OF THE ROGUE

Close by to the Valley of the Rogue State Park, this hike is a pristine location for epic views of the Rogue River and a great workout. The system of trails is primarily for mountain bikers, but there are routes to the top for hikers wanting to trek the journey to the top!

To get to the top, hikers start at the trailhead on the “Rat Pack Trail”.  This is the only trail open to hikers at the trailhead. As you ascend, be aware of cyclists ascending the hill, and be sure to yield to them. Views of the many vineyards around Gold Hill and Rogue River will soon come into view as you trek along the narrow trail gradually ascending to the top. In the springtime, wildflowers will be abundant including varieties of Iris and Larkspurs. This portion of the trail is a bit arid and there are primarily Manzanita trees along the way.

After around 2.5 miles, the “Rat Pack Trail” will intersect with the “Darkside Trail”, which you can take to the top for your last mile. The distinctness of the two trails is astounding and an experience you won't want to miss, as you enter the side of the mountain that receives less sunlight. Enjoy the change of landscape and the beauty of the surrounding moss, ferns and beautiful Manzanita trees.
