In 1954, several Medford Civic Groups, including Fruit Growers League, Chamber of Commerce, Merchants Association, American Legion and School District met with a singular purpose–to organize an event celebrating spring blossom season in the Rogue Valley that offered entertainment and promoted local business.
It was decided that a children’s parade would herald the pear blossom season. A 5 year old Junior Queen was chosen reign over the parade, consisting of 30 floats. All participants were 12 years old or younger. Some rode the floats floats, some pulled or pushed them, others just walked alongside with their pets. However, no animals larger than a St. Bernard were allowed. By 1956 the parade included over 100 floats and covered 30 miles of the valley’s blossoming trees. Motorized floats were allowed in 1964.
Since then, the festival has grown to over 150 floats and 5,000 people that glide down the 2 ½ mile route in view of over 25,000 spectators. Entries can now be as small as a dog, and as large as a semi!
2012 marks the 59th Annual Pear Blossom Festival and spans two full weeks of events with something for every age group. The celebration culminates on the weekend of April 13 and 14 with The Smudge Pot Stroll, Pear A Fare, Street Fair and Pear Blossom Run and Parade.
